Looking for fashion that moves the needle? A Junya Watanabe show will always be the place to find it. The design maestro opened the Saturday of Paris Fashion Week with an impressive display of upcycling wizardry. He sliced and diced materials we’re exposed to daily – think backpacks, soundproofing foam, BMX gear and even rubber car parts – Frankenstein-ing dresses and jackets to divine effect.
He proposed puffed-up skirts collaged from shiny silver patches, sculptural biker jackets and Innerraum backpacks pieced together to envision elegant, techy frocks. “I feel that abnormal clothing is necessary in our everyday life,” said the designer in his show notes. When it comes to this future-facing glamour, nothing’s short of spectacular.
