Jawara Alleyne and Alvaro Barrington’s Notting Hill Carnival Celebrations

Jawara Alleyne and Alvaro Barrington are teaming up to host a one-day pop-up event in celebration of this year’s Notting Hill Carnival. Taking place tomorrow at Barrington’s Whitechapel HQ, the event is set to showcase the principles of culture and community that are so deeply rooted in the annual celebration and continue to define it today.

The artistic fusion will feature the pair’s recent collaboration, the Come Home Capsule created in support of the Notting Hill Carnival Trust, alongside pieces from Alleyne’s Grace edit – which pays homage to the DIY culture and punk philosophies at the heart of Carnival and Caribbean art and is inspired by Alleyne’s ongoing collaborative display with Alvaro at the Tate – and a selection of other capsule edits from the Untitled by Jawara Alleyne collection.

This emphasis on performance within Caribbean culture resonates with both Barrington and Alleyne’s creative practice and their relationships with Carnival. Alleyne’s designs showcase the evolution of Carnival costumes and adornments, paying homage to their beauty as well as the DIY practices and punk philosophies inherent in Caribbean culture, whilst Barrington is renowned for his artistic explorations of his diasporic heritage. Don’t miss out on this exclusive pop-up! Visit Barrington’s studio at 179-181 Whitechapel Road, E1 1DN tomorrow to get in on the action before heading off to Carni! Annabel Antoniou

Ever wish you could escape to the serene forests of Japan, immersing yourself in the calming ritual of forest bathing, all while going about your daily routine? On September 3, Jo Malone London makes that possible with its new cologne called, Hinoki & Cedarwood Intense. An immersive blend of clean, aromatic notes and woody intensity, the scent will transport your nose straight to the heart of Japan’s tranquil forests whilst the fusion of cedarwood and hinoki evokes the familiar atmosphere of a clean, dry sauna. It’s truly blissful. “Hinoki & Cedarwood really takes you away; to nature, to a different place,” Céline Roux, global head of fragrance, comments. “I love the idea of the serenity that comes from the immersion in the forest. The smell of hinoki reminds me of a dry, clean sauna. It’s just beautiful.” AA

JOUISSANCE celebrates female sensuality through literature-inspired scents

There’s something subtly erotic about a good Jouissance perfume. The burgeoning fragrance brand knows this, having found its point of departure in pleasure and the “books we read beneath the sheets”. With its creations being inspired by female artists, writers and fictional characters, Jouissance refers to a complex concept meaning to “transgress the limits imposed on pleasure”, and is inherently linked to femininity because of “women’s capacity for experiencing surplus enjoyment”.

The debut collection sets the foundation for the label with three sensual perfumes ideal for the sexy intellectuals amongst us. La Bague D’O is an olfactory reimagining of Pauline Réage’s controversial classic Story of O, transformed into a scent featuring a floral bouquet with carnal and musky castoreum notes. The second perfume, En Plein Air, draws inspiration from the world of Catherine Millet, blending citrus with earthy, rain-soaked undertones. The final scent is Les Cahiers Secrets, a concoction informed by passages from Anaïs Nin’s diaries, capturing themes of eroticism, self-discovery, and the subversive power of female language, expressed through notes of fresh-cut lilies, cumin and a base of musk and pressed powder. Indulge in the smell of unapologetic female pleasure here. AA

FIELD MANEUVERS GOES OUT WITH A BANG

Talks about a proper party. Last weekend we danced under a sea of lasers and a supermoon at the final ever Field Maneuvers (in its current form, that is). The no frills, dirty little rave, which takes place in Norfolk, has spent just over a decade as one of the best festivals on the UK circuit. With just over 1,000 guests attending this year’s edition, the team behind the party plan to downsize the annual knees up for its next iteration. Not before one more big blow out, though.

The weekend was chock-full with both FM main stays and selectors who played the party for the first time. Highlights included Angel D’Lite dropping Geri Halliwell’s  “Scream If You Wanna Go Faster” peak set, LCY bringing the Low End Dreams Friday takeover to a wonderfully wonky climax, Marc Mac playing his first ever full Manix set over 30 years after first making tunes under the alias and Josey Rebelle and Ben Sims taking the Sputnik stage to another dimension with their b2b in FM’s final hours.

You’ll be stumped to find a moment of sheer, euphoric joy quite like the FM Dalston Superstore takeover, which took place on the festival’s final day. The beloved East London queer nightclub brought along a slew of its regular selectors – including Faff, J.Aria, Fancy Shews! and Michelle Manetti to soundtrack the day – with the likes of Nadine Noor and Taahliah bringing proceedings to a glorious close inside the FM Tent. When can we do it all again? PT
